Best Natural Shampoo and Conditioner

Between dealing with autoimmune disease, medication-related hair loss, and annoying bouts of eczema, I’m always on the hunt to find the best natural personal care products that won’t aggravate my health any further. Finding the best natural shampoo and conditioner can especially be a challenge. My goal is to still get that luxurious feel from a shampoo and conditioner, but without the sulfates, chemical preservatives, synthetic fragrances, and other harsh chemicals that often come with conventional hair care products.

I’ve tried several natural hair care brands, but many of them leave my hair feeling dry, are difficult to use, or they contain undesirable ingredients.

That’s why I was so happy when I discovered the following natural shampoo and conditioner brands. They are easy to use, contain nourishing ingredients, and leave my hair healthy and shiny. All these brands are also sulfate-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and safe for color treated hair. Check, check, and check.

If you’re concerned that these sulfate-free shampoos won’t lather enough, no need to worry. I’m able to get a nice, gentle lather as long as I make sure to soak my hair thoroughly before applying (I’m talking like an extra 10 seconds under the shower stream). If I still find that the shampoo isn’t lathering as I’d like, I’ll briefly wet my hair again and add a little more shampoo, and suddenly I’m able to easily get a luxurious lather that makes me feel like I’m using one of those sudsy conventional brands.

So here are my favorite three brands. They keep my hair healthy and shiny, while helping to encourage far less hair loss. Plus they smell heavenly!

Best Natural Shampoo and Conditioner Brands

Root Pretty Hair Day Shampoo

and

Root Pretty Hair Day Conditioner

Best Natural Shampoo and Conditioner

Update (as of 7/9/2018): I’m so fortunate to have discovered Root, because my new favorite natural shampoo and conditioner are Root Pretty Hair Day Shampoo and Root Pretty Hair Day Conditioner! The shampoo alone leaves my hair so soft and never feeling “stripped.” Meanwhile, the conditioner adds just the perfect amount of moisture for an ideal finishing touch.

Both the shampoo and conditioner are made of organic, nourishing ingredients. They are vegan, safe for color treated hair, and free of sulfates, parabens, gluten, and synthetic fragrance. All of this, plus they leave my hair soft, healthy, and scented with a lovely, sweet natural fragrance (seriously, the scent is divine).

Root Pretty Hair Day Shampoo Ingredients:
Organic Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Organic Chamomile Flower Extract, Organic Calendula Flower Extract, Organic Cucumber Peel Extract, EcoCert CocoGlucoside (coconut & glucose derived), Potassium Cocoate (from coconut), Sodium Chloride (salt), Caprylic & Lauric Acid (from coconut), EcoCert Propanediol 1,3 (vegetable derived), Sodium Lactate (salt), Potassium Sorbate (food grade preservative), Organic Grapefruit Essential Oil

Root Pretty Hair Day Conditioner Ingredients:
Organic Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Organic Chamomile Flower Extract, Organic Calendula Flower Extract, Organic Cucumber Peel Extract, Shea Nut Butter, Avocado Fruit Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (from rapeseed oil), Cetearyl Alcohol, Panthenol, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Stearic Acid, Baobab Seed Protein, Caprylic Acid, EcoCert Propanediol 1,3 (Vegetable), Lauric Acid, Potassium Sorbate (food grade preservative), Organic Grapefruit Essential Oil, Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil, Lemon Peel Essential Oil, Lime Essential Oil, Litsea Fruit Essential Oil, Mandarin Essential Oil, Sweet Orange Peel Oil

If you want to try them out before fully committing, Root also offers trial/sample/travel sizes of both their shampoo and conditioner. (In fact, Root conveniently offers trial sizes for many of their products. This is how I discovered many of their products, including their amazing Beauty Sleep Perfecting Serum…wow!)

Best Natural Shampoo and Conditioner, 100% Pure Honey & Virgin Coconut Shampoo and Conditioner

100% Pure Honey & Virgin Coconut Shampoo and 100% Pure Honey & Virgin Coconut Conditioner are also one of my favorite natural shampoo and conditioner duos. Not only are they nourishing and gentle, but they smell absolutely delicious. 100% Pure has many products with lovely scents, and they are all scented naturally (from fruit extractions). So if you want a natural shampoo and conditioner but prefer something sweet smelling and less “earthy,” this is the way to go.

100% Pure’s formulas do not contain synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, chemical preservatives, sulfates, detergents or any other harsh ingredients. Although this particular duo is not vegan (because they contain cruelty-free honey), 100% Pure features other great natural shampoo and conditioner options that are vegan. After using this natural shampoo and conditioner, my hair feels soft and healthy (and it smells yummy).

Best Natural Shampoo and Conditioner, Nurture My Body Moisturizing Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner

Nurture My Body Moisturizing Shampoo and Nurture My Body Nourishing Conditioner are also two of my favorites. They leave my hair soft and moisturized but never heavy or greasy.

I use the scented versions (scented with essential oils), and they leave me with a fresh, clean scent. There is also a fragrance-free option if you are sensitive to even natural fragrance, and various other shampoo and conditioner options.

And bonus: Nurture My Body’s Moisturizing Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner both rate a 1 in EWG’s Skin Deep database, meaning they have a very low hazard score.

#invisibledisabilitiesweek : This is me about thre #invisibledisabilitiesweek : This is me about three years ago at at a family party (here with my Auntie Agnes 💕). I woke up that morning and got ready, put on some makeup and had some color in my cheeks, went to the party and pretended everything was just fine. What nobody knew that day was that I was so weak and sick, I was secretly holding myself up by leaning on tables and chairs, so I could stand up and try to hold a normal conversation. The rest of the time, I found excuses to sit down and hoped that no one would notice how lousy I felt. My body had started experiencing a new Crohn’s flare, and I would end up in the hospital just a few days later. Just a few weeks after that, I’d end up in surgery and would get my ileostomy because we’d run out of options, and it was my only hope for survival (second pic was taken two days after surgery).
.
.
But on this day, nobody knew. I looked perfectly “normal.” This is how it is with invisible illness and invisible disability. In fact, every day is like this when living with chronic illness - experiencing ongoing symptoms of pain, weakness, and malaise that no one else can see.
.
.
We don’t share these stories because we are looking for pity or sympathy. We share for the purpose of awareness, to help others understand why that person who “looks fine” may need extra accommodations, medications, a disabled placard, or simply extra time to accomplish everyday tasks.
.
.
I still get self conscious when parking in a disabled spot, no matter how awful I might be feeling in that moment, for fear of judgement from those who can’t see my symptoms. 🙈 Please remember that we have no idea what someone else is going through simply by looking at them. Please remember to be kind!
.
.
It’s Invisible Disabilities Week, so I’ll be sharing more in my stories!

Hello friends! It’s been a while since I’ve po Hello friends! It’s been a while since I’ve posted, and I think it’s because I’ve been battling a lot of anxiety lately. While self-isolation is nothing new for me (thanks, Crohn’s! 👍😂), there’s the new added stress of being in the “high-risk” category and trying to avoid exposure to the virus, all while scrambling to find my regular necessities, food and medical supplies during this time (not just for myself but for my other high-risk family members). My symptoms are exacerbated with stress, and the last thing I want is to end up in the hospital and take up a bed that someone else will need. Meanwhile, for some reason, I’ve been more busy than ever (oh, how I long to be one of those bored people who make and post TikTok videos all day 😩).
.
.
But whenever I’m starting to feel overwhelmed, I’m able to gain some perspective when I think about all the healthcare workers and on the front lines, as well as all the essential workers (first responders, and grocery store workers, delivery workers, etc.) who are working feverishly to keep us all safe, healthy, and functioning as normally as possible. My thanks goes out to all of you in those categories, and well as to my friends and family who have offered us help with shopping and groceries during this time.
.
.
And I’m also grateful to those of you who are not necessarily high-risk but are taking all of this seriously by social distancing and sheltering in place. As a chronic illness warrior, I thank you!
.
.
Prayers and love to everyone struggling with anxiety or trying to make sense of this pandemic. The unknown is scary, but I find comfort in knowing there are so many caring people out there and the fact that we’re all in this together. 🙏🏻❤️
