I’d been planning on putting together a little wedding playlist, and what better time than on this historic day? These are just a few of my favorite love songs — of course, there are so many more I could have chosen — but I tried to choose songs that are less likely to be found on most other wedding song lists (okay, one predictable song did make the list, but I just can’t resist that Ed Sheeran tune). And considering that music and love are both universal languages, the two go hand in hand perfectly, don’t they? Enjoy the playlist,… Read More
Full Circle: A Tribute to Dad
***As we head into Father’s Day weekend, I think it’s a good time to share this popular post, originally published in September 2014. Thinking of (and missing) my dad, and wishing all the other dads out there a very Happy Father’s Day!*** As I’m finishing up reading my latest nutrition book (a really good one, by the way, which I’ll be sharing with you all soon) and learning about all these complex nutritional principles, beliefs and theories, I can’t help but think about my dad. My dad was the ultimate health nut. He’d spent years struggling with his own health… Read More
Natural Nail Polish: Zoya
A recent article from the NY Times is both disturbing and eye-opening, as it sheds light on an important ongoing issue: the dangers that nail salon workers face on a daily basis due to exposure to harmful chemicals found in nail care products. It also reminds us that these dangers don’t just stop with those who work in nail salons; it applies to all of us who use nail polish (and other nail products) on a regular basis. While we may not be breathing in these chemicals for hours every day, many of us are still exposed to them (even… Read More
Vintage Vacation: Paris
Moments before I’m about to go undergo a medical procedure, my doctor always tells me to close my eyes and think of my “happy place.” I close my eyes and picture myself lying in a patch of the greenest grass, with sunlight peeking through the clouds overhead on a warm, breezy day in Paris. I’m in a park, I think, where people are picnicking, laughing, perhaps taking an afternoon snooze. I can’t see it, but off in the distance is the Eiffel Tower. I can hear voices around me, but they are faint and soothing, for all I feel is… Read More
Wish List: Wedding Guest Fashion
I’m so excited because in just a couple of weeks, we have a family wedding coming up…and who doesn’t love a wedding? But as much as I always look forward to the celebration part (in this case it will be my brother-in-law and his lovely bride-to-be), there is always a little part of me that goes into minor panic mode with that inevitable question: what am I going to wear? Sure, it’s a trivial matter in the grand scheme of things, but I can’t help but feel a little vanity when special occasions roll around. So in my quest to… Read More
Green Bean and Mushroom Salad (Paleo, Whole30, Vegan)
My mom makes the best green bean and potato salad. It’s always been one of my favorites, but as my autoimmune disease progressed and I realized I had to change my eating habits, eating starchy white potatoes went right out the window. Rather than abandon this family favorite altogether, I decided to use mushrooms as a substitution. This green bean and mushroom salad works perfectly for me (since I love mushrooms!), and it’s so easy to make (sometimes simple is best!). Although most of the ingredients in this recipe are cooked, this salad is best enjoyed chilled, making it the… Read More
Choosing a Healthy Sunscreen: Part 1
***For my most recent safe sunscreen choices, check out this updated post: Best Safe Sunscreens of 2018!*** With summer just around the corner, it’s a perfect time to discuss how to choose a healthy sunscreen and share some of my favorite sunscreen brands. As we all know, sunscreen use is important to protect against skin cancer as well as premature aging of the skin. Unfortunately, I know this all too well, as I’ve lost count of how many procedures I’ve had to endure over the last several months in my dermatologist’s office. I’m so tired of receiving “atypical”… Read More
10 Paleo Cinco de Mayo Recipes
Mexican food is one of my faaaavorite types of food, so creating this roundup of 10 Paleo Cinco de Mayo recipes made me really, really hungry. Of course, when you’re Paleo, it may seem like it may not be worth venturing into Mexican cuisine; after all, we have to miss out on foods like conventional tortillas, corn chips, beans, and sometimes dairy. But there are so many other delectable and acceptable options in Paleo Land, and recipes like the following make it so that we don’t have to feel deprived at all! Seriously, my mouth is watering just looking at… Read More
Homemade Fresh Salsa (Paleo, Whole30, Vegan)
It’s hard to find an all-organic commercial fresh salsa. There are plenty of jarred organic options out there. But fresh? Very rare (at least, in my experience). Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to make homemade fresh salsa with wholesome, additive-free, all-organic ingredients. That being said, I have to admit: I can’t take credit for this recipe. This recipe is all Jeremy’s. He is the salsa connoisseur in our household, so whether store-bought or homemade, he’s tried just about everything. After experimenting with numerous recipes over the last several years, this is one of our favorite versions of his homemade fresh salsa…. Read More
Nostalgic 90s (Playlist)
You guys probably know by now that I love getting nostalgic, so it’s about time I put together a playlist of some good 90s tunes. While I have lots of great posts in the works (I’m working on a new Paleo bread recipe, plus I have Jeremy working on a recipe all his own!), I wanted to take a break and flash back to a decade that encapsulates so many great memories for me: from high school to college to my first “real” job, the 90s were a special time. There are tons of tunes that I could have chosen… Read More
